LYRICS:

There is a lynching at Home Depot of the last day laborer
In this sanctuary city with its anchor-baby births
They say "Its time we had some justice for the white race on this earth
This place is strange and getting stranger"

"We got to round 'em up!
Door to door tonight we're ready"
Knock Knock Knock
"Drag them from their beds
They got some nerve to say they were here first"
"We're gonna round them up!
Hiding in the semi-trailers"
Knock Knock Knock
"Beat it in their heads
We keep our word and Maricopa pure"

They're sweating in Sun City cause they just got off the course
Saying "Sheriff Joe it's awful and it's only getting worse"
"Oh did you hear about Rob Krentz? They left him bleeding in the dirt
These Spics are brave and getting braver"

"We got to round 'em up!
Door to door the posse is ready"
Knock Knock Knock
"Drag them from their beds
Cause it's their turn for someone to get hurt"
"We're gonna round 'em up!
Crying in the day-care center"
Knock Knock Knock
"Beat it in their heads
They'll never learn until Maricopa burns!"

"The rule of law is supposed to be objective, when you start making it subjective..."

The law is always subjective. Not too long ago black weren't recognized as full citizens in America and we operated concentration camps for the ethnically Japanese.

The law is a farce. Tyrants, you know, never break the law. They make the laws.

I don't think it's an extreme position to be against one of the most brazenly corrupt law enforcement agencies in the would country...

Probably worse. Rich people from Scottsdale go to separate hotel-like facilities and then suddenly make campaign contributions. The sheriff himself has been complicit in the coverup of multiple murders in the county jails. Some local CopWatch has caught deputies pulling people over while wearing ski masks and patches sewn over their name tags. They'll ignore a sex crime against a child if that child is even related to illegal immigrants. They falsify evidence all the time. It's really bad.

The only direct quotes in the song are the back and forth between Sheriff Joe and the newscaster. You really think Sheriff Joe said "these spics are braver getting braver." They are direct quotes in the sense that Conor puts them directly into the ouths of the straw men he constructs. You can't directly quote someone who doesn't exist. You mean to say they are dialogue.

Check out the lyrics for this song as listed on the Desaparecidos website. Most of what Conor is singing is direct quotes. So, while I agree with your sentiment that it's dishonest to put words in peoples mouths, in this case that is not applicable.

Ok, but to an extent you are making my point for me. According to the logic of this song only a racist would be concerned by the murder of Rob Krentz. I say that any decent person should be outraged by his murder. You don't use murder to score cheap rhetorical points. Really protest songs should never put words in their opponents mouths the temptation towards dishonestly portraying your opponent is too great. But I get that someone like Oberst would be tempted to emulate Dylan's Hurricane.
