"The Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life project has reported that 42% of adults aged 50 and up in America are a part of Facebook or other online communities, a 20% boost from April, reports InformationWeek.com.

The percentage of 18- to 29-year-old users using social media jumped from 76% to 86%.

Senior researcher and author of the report Mary Madden commented: ""Young adults continue to be the heaviest users of social media, but their growth pales in comparison with recent gains made by older users.""

50- to 64-year-olds increased their use of social networks by 88%; 26% of the 65-plus generation were using social media by the end of May; 47% of people using social media by end of May were 50- to 64-year-olds.

Also, one in five adults aged 50 to 64 said they typically use social media, a 10% boost from last year."
