  • In the UK many years ago I was taught that this was a publicity stunt to put Dayton on the map.

    Forensic collusion in fact.

  • Some men in Dayton saw an ad saying that the ACLU would provide defense for any teacher willing to challenge the Butler Act, which made teaching Darwin's theory illegal. Business was slow, and, realizing that a trial would bring the town recognition, they asked local teacher John T. Scopes if he would be willing to challenge the act. (The book Scopes taught from included Darwin's theory.) At the time, however, they didn't realize that the trial would give the town worldwide recognition.

  • its footage from the 1920s, do you expect it to be in high definition?

  • USA is such a scary place - I thought people so ardently believing in space gods and the holy scriptures of a neolithic tribe in the middle east didn't exist any more outside of the darkest recesses of Saudi Arabia. What the hell happened to standing on the shoulders of giants? As I understand it America was set up by great, great men who put religion on the back burner in order to lead world progress. When did the absolute bunch of chumps who are running the show now shoulder barge in?

  • You mean as a fact, right?

  • it seems like yesterday... wait a minute .. it was yesterday, ...the religious people in power are still trying to keep people in the dark agaes.

  • @becharev scopes wasn't even the normal teacher, he was a substitute at the time and evolution was being taught already, it was in their text books

  • a sad time for american history......

  • @imagewise I don't think the aborigine were too well served by the invading British in Australia either, if I understand it correctly.

  • Becharev is right

  • The trial was a publicity stunt and Scopes did not teach evolution. That's why he did not testify. He helped to persuade some students to say that he taught evolution. The world's news media were duped and remain duped. For the true story see Chapter Three, "The Great Scopes Scam," of Eugene Windchy's The End of Darwinism.

  • I don't think religion is necessary for a virtuous/moral life. Most of the founders did. The only true atheist I can find is Thomas Paine.

  • "Determine never to be idle. No person will have occasion to complain of the want of time, who never loses any. It is wonderful how much may be done, if we are always doing. And that you may be always doing good, my dear, is the ardent prayer of yours affectionately." --Thomas Jefferson, letter to Martha Jefferson, 1787

  • "Adore God. Reverence and cherish your parents. Love your neighbor as yourself, and your country more than yourself. Be just. Be true. Murmur not at the ways of Providence. So shall the life into which you have entered be the portal to one of eternal and ineffable bliss." --Thomas Jefferson, letter to Thomas Jefferson Smith, 1825
