Warsaw (Warszawa) is the capital of Poland.
In 1939, Germany on September 1 and the Soviet Union on September 17 invaded Poland.
The Battle of Warsaw started on September 1 with huge aerial bombardments by the Luftwaffe. Fighting on land started on September 8, and lasted until September 28, when the Polish garrison under Gen. Walerian Czuma capitulated. On October 1 the Wehrmacht entered the city, which started a period of German occupation. Warsaw, as was its tradition under foreign occupation, soon became the main center of resistance. In 1943, the Germans defeated the Uprising in the Jewish Ghetto resulting in a total annihilation of this district. After the defeat of the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, the city was given a death sentence. The population that had survived up to that point was expelled or deported to concentration camps. The Germans began the systematic destruction of the town.
An estimated 650,000 of Warsaw's people lost their lives and 85 percent of the urban fabric was destroyed as a result of the war. After the war, Warsaw rose from the ashes like a phoenix and was rebuilt with the heroic effort of Polish citizens.
Warsaw has a great history. It is true that Warsaw is "phoenix city".
