Catalinas were given to the British from the Americans during WW2 in the Lend Lease Act. They used the to spot German Battleships since there range was much longer.
They used the Catalina's to spot the Bismarck which was heading toward the safety of the waters of occupied France.

the PBY 5 Catalina..one of my favorites amphibians...the Grumman HU 16 Albatros is wonderful as well
