Around 10:15, Kurt suggested we get out of his truck and go walk over to where the fireworks will be going off.
"Umm..." I tell him.
"What? You don't want to watch them anymore?" He asks me as a small look of disappointment takes over his face.
"No, it's not that. It's just..."
"People," he finishes for me.
I look down at my hands. "Yeah, not a fan."
"So you want to go home?"
I think about his question. Honestly, I don't want to. I've had fun with him tonight. No matter how badly I hoped that I wouldn't.
"No," I say to him. "Let's go."
He looks at me with a concerned look on his face. "I probably have some blankets in here. We could sit in the back of my truck and watch," he suggests. Much better idea.
I nod, "Okay."
After searching for a blanket, we get out of his pick-up truck and move to the back of it. We sit on opposite sides, facing each other.
"Oh, hold on," he says to me right before jumping out and walking to the drivers side door of the truck. He comes back a minute later and sits across from me again, stretching his legs out in front of him so that they are parallel to mine. Then, he sets down the gray portable iPod dock, with his iPod touch in it, between the two of use. A second or two later, a song that I recognize starts coming through the device. In a serious, yet silly, tone he tells me, "I'd like to dedicate this song to you, Miss Kallie."
I laugh as he sings along with a goofy smile on his face, "YOU HAVEEEE STOLENNN MYYYYYYY HEARRRRT."
"Oh gosh," I say.
I giggle again as he screams the lyrics. People walking by in the parking lot look at us like we're mental or something. If Kurt noticed, he sure doesn't show it.
"Stop singing!" I tell him, but he doesn't listen. I laugh and shake my head. "You have issues."
He finally stops and smiles at me. "You didn't like my singing?" he asks with the best fake hurt in his voice.
Sarcastically, I reply, "Of course I did."
At that moment, I hear a crack and look up at the dark sky. Bright flashes of colorful light are all I can see. I notice Kurt follow my gaze and turn his head around to see the fireworks as well. Then, he turns back to face me and slides over so he is sitting next to me and has a better view. Neither of us says a word until they're over. When they are, Kurt catches me staring down at my wrist again.
I look up and see him staring at it as well.
"What happened?" he asks before turning his head upwards, leaving me staring right into his blue eyes.
I quickly turn my head away so I'm looking in the direction where the firewords were going off only moments before. Then, I close my eyes for a second and re-open them before answering his question with one word. "Glass."
I don't turn my head back to him, but I can tell he's trying to take this in and figure out what it means. "Accident?" he asks me, curiously. He means a car accident. They all do.
"Something like that," I respond and finally look back at his worried face.
He nods and stands up. "We should get out of here."
"Oh. Yeah. You're probably right," I try to hide the disappointment in my voice.
He holds out his hand to me and I grab it, allowing him to help me up.
Once we're back in the truck, he asks me, "So you want me to take you home?"
"Could you take me to Lucy's actually?" I ask in return as a confused look shows up on his face. "My car is there," I add.
"Ahh," he says. "Do you really think that's a good idea?"
I lean my head against the back of the seat, "She told me to get a ride."
He starts the car and a small smile shows up on his face. "Okay."
