You don't get flames at idle on todays top fuel engine because the 90+ gpm pumps keep the mix a lot richer. So rich that without spark and compression the excess fuel in the pipes will not burn. Hence, no flames.
Nitro, contrary to what you might think is very difficult to ignite. You must have compression, correct mixture and a very hot spark to keep from dropping a cylinder and getting into a hydraulic situation.
Well, they shot out flames like that because there was no real fuel flow controll. It sure didnt' make the cars faster to run like that, infact, tended to foul spark plugs if you took too long staging. Often, more often than not infact, the fuel system that made those exciting header flames, also tended to turn the engine into a bomb.
When was the last time we saw something like this at your local dragstrip? Sure do miss the header flames as the nitro fuelers and F/C's are just idleing, NHRA please bring back the 60's to our dragstips at all national events!!
This is when top fuel dragsters were kings, totally bad to the bone header flames during idle, not something you see any more, and the pansy nhra kicking back to 85% nitro now days, wimps!
Its and audio and visual symphony ......

sorry but thats not correct
The flames are because of a leaner fuel mixture.
