The Black Stone of Mecca is a Muslim relic, It would seem to be some kind of meteorite. It is the eastern cornerstone of the Kaaba. The tradition that the stone originally came down from heaven seems to account for its origin and eminence. It is obviously a tektite or meteorite which, because it had fallen out of the sky, was treated with awe by the ancient Arabs. The Black Stone was simply a meteorite that was reverenced as a god by the ancient pre-Islamic Arabs. Its retention in Islam, especially the primitive custom of kissing it, speaks volumes for the ancient pre-Islamic character of the Hajj Pilgrimage as a whole.
