I had a go on this great tutorial: http://max.cgcookie.com/2009/08/18/creating-an-exploding-planet/
This is the result of my 3D doodling. It's a bit basic in some elements, the lighting, the lack of camera shake, but it demonstrates the particle effect well using solid geometry. Just a quick "for fun" project as are most of my uploads here.
