The tune is Charles Trenet, La Mer (1946)

If you haven't seen L.A Story, it's one of Steve Martin's finest creations. A great cast. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102250/

  • Thank you for posting this......totally agree.......brilliant opening titles, from one of Steve Martin's funniest movies, a great send-up of life in La La Land......and a brilliant soundtrack too. Do yourself a favour and watch this .........

  • The helicopter with the hot dog is a parody of the opening to Fellini's 'La Dolce Vita', another great movie about life in an excessive party city (Rome of the early 60s.) Check it out!

  • Such a shame Steve Martin stopped writing his own movies. He and Eddie Murphy were the greats of the 80s and are both now doing crappy movies simply for the reason they aren't writing them.

  • love. this movie. Always gave me hope I'd meet someone to love that loved me with equal passion.

Shared a wonderful date with a lady, Anne. We met in a way that brought laughter to my voice as soon as I saw her. Thank you Anne for finding me, you little tractor beam, you.

  • love. this movie. Always gave me hope I'd meet someone to love that loved me with equal passion.

  • love how the flying hot dog just sets the tone for the rest of the film. brilliant!

  • EVeryone still had 80s fashion back in 1991. Miss those days.

  • Can't believe it's only got 800 views after 6 months! This is one clip I've been checking for regularly over the years - thanks for uploading it! Agree - one of the best opening titles ever - beautiful melding of music and visuals, while also establishing the setting and tone of the movie. Up there with the title scene of Woody Allen's Manhattan - another favourite of mine.

  • Isn't this some sort of callback to a Fellini movie? I don't know much Fellini, I'll be honest. But I seem to remember reading that once.
