My weather radio went off early this evening (September 30, 2008) for some severe thunderstorms that rolled through the area.

The model that I have is the Midland WR-100C Weather/All Hazards/Civil Emergency Alert Monitor with S.A.M.E.

I highly suggest that you get one. Each county in the United States has a code, and when you program that code into the weather radio, whenever a warning/watch is issued for that county, the weather radio goes off.

BTW:

I said "It's not us" and "It seems to be getting pretty dark, though." (referring to the fact that we weren't covered under the warning, and even though the storms are north and west of us, it was getting pretty dark).

Here were the storms that set the radio off:

For the geographically impaired - the storms are located near Washington DC.

  • This storm also prompted a Tornado Warning in Fairfax County about an hour later. No reports of any tornadoes yet...

  • Already got one as an early Birthday Present and the alert system worked rather well.

  • These are a household essential. These can and do save lives. Just like a smoke detector warns of a fire, this warns of tornadoes, and other weather hazards such as severe thunderstorms and flash floods.
