Hey there.
Ouch - that's an old thing you've been given there, but decent for a beginner.
Now - to the real feedback. Do yourself the favor and hold the instrument correctly.
Press down the valves only with your fingertips. if they are hard to press down and has a tendency to stick, use some valve-oil to losen them.
Secondly - hold the instrument at the pipes close to the valves. It will give you better hold and stability on the instrument.
