France's former president Jacques Chirac was placed under formal investigation on Friday, a further step toward being handed a second set of corruption charges stemming from his time as the mayor of Paris. The 77-year-old is already on course to become the first former French leader to go on trial, having been charged with corruptly abusing his postion as mayor of Paris between 1977 and 1995. The legal move on Friday concerns charges that he paid his political allies illegally by creating false jobs for them on the Paris city hall payroll. Archival footage of Chirac.
