Drove down from Southern Oregon for this show. It was worth every mile. The mix sucked however and didn't do the band justice. DT has changed as any other band does; especially with a drummer swap. What I saw was nothing short of typical mind blowing talent. You know the stuff that makes you shake your head in disbelief as your jaw hits your lap. To fill Portnoys throne is next to impossible but Mr. Mangini has brought new life and amazing talent to DT. You can feel it!!! Great job Mike!!

@metalmike83 ...True on MM's capabilities....and because of those capabilities he has more to chose from as far as styles to play in his solo's.....MM's solos are geared towards chechnical drummer's/ rock drummers..where MP's are for rock drummers/non musician fans as well.....IMO...a couple of my favorites are Bissonette, Morgenstein, S. Phillips and S. Smith...all w/the ability to play wide variety of styles..so im used to that I guess......MP is a great drummer...just boring to me sometimes.

@metalmike83 But I will say this - MM has MP beat in the overall functional drummer department - he can play more complicated beats. He has more control with his feet. He has faster hands. He's more advanced rythmically. This gives him a larger pallet when playing DT's songs. From what I heart - he's just as good as MP at coming up with brilliant drum parts. The only thing MP has over him is creativity while soloing. But MM is eligible for far more gigs.

@mikeybbdrummin Why do anything different when that's what sounds sooo good? That being said, I just heard one of the songs off the new album - on the backs of angels. Mangini's drum sound is better overall than Portnoy's who too often muffles his snare. Also, MM's feel when playing with MUSIC is brilliant - possibly better than Portnoy's. MM also has superior skills overall concerning independence. However, his solos are horrible. MP has him beat in the solo department.

@metalmike83 .................To me MP's solos are boring........Ok hes got the hand and feet down....we get it.....lets see something different.................MM had variety here at least.......listen to the new cd..................how can MP have feel and MM not when they are playing the same style w/the same guys???.......................
you think after 25 years w/MP DT would get a subpar drummer??..................wil l the choices they had, that would have been impossible. -
@mikeybbdrummin they are easy but Portnoy executes them with a proficiency that surpasses Mangini. Mangini has a clear speed advantage when the hands and feet are separate - but I've never heard him play hand-to-food combinations as fast as Portnoy. Also, Portnoy is faaaaaar more creative when he solos - Mangini has skills but his solos lack direction and sound choppy and poorly put together. Mike Portnoy comes up with brilliant parts that I have yet to hear from Mangini. MM also lacks feel.

@MlKEPORNTOY ................I think ur describing the wrong Mike.

@metalmike83 ....MP's chops are built around foot/hand combinations and arent hard............Alex Van Halen, T. Aldridge, G. Bissonette, D.Castronovo, R. Castillo, R. Morgenstein, S. Smith, S. Phillips, A. Johanssen all use the same variety of patterns.....but they do it sparingly/tastefully so it's not being used to the point of being over done......I dont care if you LOVE MP.................if you are too stuborn to admit that MM's level surpasses MP's then ur just silly......
@donnymarvin ...................Sure.......if you don't like independence capabitities only reached by few drummers, speed, off beat grooves, foot/hand combinations, crazy footwork..............................yea, I guess those things arent important or appreciated you would have a point................................But I would have to disagree.............great drummer and addition to the band!
