Now, as a straight man, I have no qualms about admitting that I like "The Wizard of Oz." And, I once checked out a deluxe edition of the soundtrack so I could have the songs on my iPod. And one of the tracks was this gem.

When Harold Arlen and E.Y. "Yip" Harburg wrote "Over the Rainbow," they wrote a second verse, which was to be sung by Dorothy while lock in the Witch's castle, which went as follows:

"Someday I'll wake and rub my eyes
And in that land beyond the skies,
You'll find me
I'll be a laughing daffodil
And leave the silly cares that fill
My mind behind me"

Although the verse wasn't used in the film, it is used in theatrical productions to this day (although as part of the main song; The only recording featuring the "lost verse" is from Jewel, as part of "The Wizard of Oz in Concert: Dreams Come True" and her album "Lullaby"). However, a reprise of the song was filmed. Although the visual potion of the scene was lost (presumably forever), the audio portion of the scene survived. This is what I'm presenting.

In it, Judy Garland, in character as Dorothy, is locked in the Witch's castle. She weeps her way through the song, and, at the end, unable to complete it, cries out "I'm frightened, Auntie Em -- I'm frightened!" (Although the scene was cut, the line was retained.)

Although every other musical number was done to pre-recorded tracks, this was sung live on the set. This was due to the fact that it would be to emotional for Judy to successfully lip-sync. The scene was shot, with piano accompaniment, live on the set, with orchestration to be added in later.

Myself, not wanting to just set the song to a plain picture, decided to have the picture change through out the scene. I used Windows Movie Maker, and a picture I found via Google.

I know, it's a little scary that I know this much about "The Wizard of Oz," but I do. And, if you watch this, and you STILL think Judy Garland is a bad actress, then you should be castrated, so you do not pollute the human population.

That being said, enjoy! :-)

  • i would like to see the jitter bug sean,,any one know where i can find it?

  • @25FIREBALL Unfortunately, you can't. Though the audio from a choreography rehearsal (with the choreographer Dona Mason in place of Judy) and the studio recording both still exist, the only surviving footage that exists from the scene is home movies shot by Harold Arlen during filming, which is available on the most two most recent DVD and BRD releases.

  • @FamGuyFreak100 (The last line is SUPPOSED to say "which is available on the two most recent DVD and BRD releases.")

  • @25FIREBALL However, the number is regularly featured in stage productions of the film, as well was in the TV specials "The Wizard of Oz in Concert: Dreams Come True" (featuring Jewel) and "The Wizard of Oz on Ice" (with Bobby McFerrin), both of which can be found on YouTube. :)

  • okay for some reason i really feel like i've seen this scene, like a long time ago. was it in any versions?

  • @Claire131478 Unfortunately, no. The scene was cut fairly early on, and it's believed that the video no longer exists and is sitting at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean (where studios would dump unused footage to make room in storage). However, the audio, set to pictures of the scene, was included on the 2009 Blu-Ray and DVD releases and the 2005 and, I believe, 1997 DVD release. So it's fairly possible you have heard the audio.

  • This is so good to hear. As a singer myself, we are taught to put all our feelings into a piece, just up to the point that the emotions don't break it.Here we hear the depth of her feelings & see her heart. Music is done with extremes: happiness or sadness, or it will not come across. think of how you feel when there is strong emotion. Multiply that by 5 or 10. I am sure that is what got to her. It was her depth of feeling that made her so wonderful to us & that same depth that took her from us.

  • I am posessed.

  • This makes me sad and I HATE to hear people sing while crying.

  • Thanks for sharing...

  • @ZodiacBryan Perhaps that's why they cut it - made it too emotionally intense

  • I've always thought Aunty Em was messed up.She could have saved everyone a whole lot of trouble but she went with the "Christian woman" speech:"If I weren't a Christian woman, well,I'd tell you what to do."

A good Christian woman would have slapped that Satan worshippin' bicycle pedaler & took the dog back.

  • What is Judy doing

  • i love this movie, however. this song does not appear on the soundtrack

  • great actress, Judy....
