Malaysia expects to be considered a developed nation by the year 2020, as expressed in Wawasan 2020. There is slight expectation from the public for the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur to host the Summer Olympics to mark Wawasan 2020.With the success of the 1998 Commonwealth Games, Kuala Lumpur had decided to bid for the 2008 Games but it did not succeed in becoming a candidate on the shortlist,nor did it make the shortlist in its bid for the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics.
