yes

While it is true I have had some rough times, this poem is meant to remind that ultimately I believe in the affirmation of life and, at the risk of cliche, the transformative power of love.

Written for all those that I cherish - all those who, in some measure, have helped me keep the light kindled.

"Yes", I said,

the sound starting as a tension in the throat,
the tongue arched hard against the palette,
then releasing quickly forward,
nestling behind the front teeth,
the aspirated air escaping
to form that singular syllable,
both sharp and soft at once:

"Yesssss"

And in that brief pause
before silence answers,
in that merest of moments
before the lips close back up,
I linger over its sense of affirmation,
its sense of not mere acceptance or allowance,
but embrace.

And you have taught me something
of that embracing,
that opening up to a presence of being
that is simultaneously intimate and immeasurable,
both the inward turn of wonder
and the outward expansiveness of world.

So yes....

to all of you, and every ounce of you,
to the thought of you, and the strength of you,
to the beauty of you, and the stride of you,
to the heart of you, and the love of you,
to the sacred sense that shines in you,
and all that moves and moves through you,
to all that is endless and endlessly you.....

I say simply:

yes
