These man boobs (moobs) are actually air sacs that produce the popping noise you hear. They also have a frequency modulated intonation that sounds in between the two pops. These two sounds have been found to be correlated with mating success, which is very important to this species because it is one of few birds that are promiscuous. The males group together in leks while the females come, mate, and go off to raise young alone.

@aki1210 And that is a major problem! Many people walk up to an open field and think nothing lives there. So they stuff another housing addition, strip mall, etc. in that spot. The sage grouse, greater prairie chicken just to name a few are losing there places to mate and live! We as a human race forget to learn and embrace a very important word......"BALANCE"!
