Ireland bow out of their first ever appearance at a major finals competition after a hard-fought game with the Netherlands that ended 1-0 in favour of the Dutch. Wim Kieft's headed goal 8 minutes from full time was enough to see the Dutch through the group stage. They went on to beat hosts West Germany in the semi-final and eventually won the competition outright after victory over the USSR in the final.

Footage from the documentary, 'The Charlton Years'.

  • We won this match, we won this cup. Every champion has luck sometimes, get over it!

  • @ForAfewMoviesMore Indeed, congratulations. No harm in discussion with regard to specific incidents in the game though. It's what football fans do.

  • 1:24 Packie : "Off Fucking Side"

Agreed. The ref rarely does Ireland any favours on teh big occasion.

  • @Dustbin1149Jr I think you're right. Even Van Basten is a few metres offside under the old rules, whatever about Kieft.

  • what i'm saying is that the call wasn't correct under the old rules, but that those rules sucked and the current offside rule makes much more sense. if you still don't get it, that's not my fault. i also think referees were in some cases instinctively applying the current rule before it was officially implemented. watch the careca goal against france from WC 1986, it's the same thing. i can understand your pain and anger, no need to be aggressive though. and yes, nice goal by ronnie.

  • @jefdarcy Oh really? Did you not see our goal against USSR in the same tournament?? God almighty Dougal, do you know anything about anything???

  • I think the question is "can you write". You're basically saying that the call the ref made in 1988 was wrong, but if we wait until 2011 to analyse it, it becomes a good call?? Please go away and stop lowering my IQ!

  • @Dustbin1149Jr: cry me a river... i think you perfectly understood what i wanted to say, but i guess you're irish, so i can understand you're hurting. try to see it this way: it was worth it just for having the germans kicked out by holland and for marco's goal in the final. the irish wouldn't have achieved none of that.

  • @jefdarcy

So you even acknowledge that the ref made the wrong call, but that somehow it was 'a good call'? Ah ok then. I guess I've been interpreting the the laws of the game wrong all this time.

A "good call" is the referee making the correct decision at that precise time. Van Basten was offside so it was a "bad call" and nothing else.

  • @mistersatinlover Estonia are gone alright

  • That Paul McGrath header was our ticket into the semi finals

  • jkenefick: can you read? i clearly said it wasn't correct under the old rules. i meant good in the sense of visionary. the new rule makes much more sense.
