'Batman' director to oversee return of Man of Steel.

What Say You? Nolan's Superman Reboot
Does this really look like a job for the Batman helmer?
by Jim Vejvoda
February 9, 2010 - The world of fandom was rocked today by the news that Christopher Nolan, the director of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, has reportedly been tapped by Warner Bros. to "mentor" the studio's reboot of the Superman franchise. This will mark Warners' third attempt at bringing the Man of Steel to the big screen, following the Christopher Reeve film series and 2006's Superman Returns. Nolan won't direct the film -- at least that's what Deadline Hollywood is claiming -- but he will serve as "a godfather" in shepherding it along, guiding the project's creative development and consulting on what the story should be and who should direct.

But is the helmer of such psychological films as the Bat-series, Memento, Insomnia, The Prestige, and the forthcoming Inception really the right man for the job? There is no question that Nolan is an exceptionally talented filmmaker -- one who saved the Batman franchise and turned it into a critical and commercial phenomenon -- but do his dark, cerebral sensibilities really suit the lighter, brighter world of Superman? First Batman gets revamped, then talk of Spider-Man being redone, now its the Man of Steels turn. Christopher Nolan, the director of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, has been reported by Deadline Hollywood to be brought on to a Superman reboot.

Its been 3 ½ years since the last Superman movie, Superman Returns, and Warner Bros is looking to revitalize the franchise. Too do this theyve brought in Batman director Christopher Nolan to oversee this new movie in order to make sure it gets off the ground. While still in early production with specifics being closely guarded, it has been stated that this movie will be completely new and not an extension of the previous films as Superman Returns was.

Christopher is also pulling double duty for Warner Bros. as he is also working on a third Batman movie. Joining him will be Batman Begins writer David Goyer and his brother Jonah Nolan. While Christopher has been confirmed to be working on the script for Batman 3, it is unknown whether hell direct the movie or take a more mentoring role due to his involvement with the Superman reboot.

One major snag in all this is a legal battle between the heirs of the creator of Superman and DC/Warner Bros. Put simply, if production on this Superman reboot doesnt begin by 2011, then the heirs could sue for damages as they will own the Superman Copyright by 2013.

Batman, Superman, Spiderman, Green Lantern, and Ironman, it seems the movies are heading back to heroes.
