Neither the song or the clips are mine, the clips are from the Movie Glory (1989), and the song is "The day the sun stood still" by Travis Trit

Douglass and the abolitionists (including Robert's parents) argued that because the aim of the war was to end slavery, African Americans should be allowed to engage in the fight for their freedom. The regiment was authorized in March 1863 by the Governor of Massachusetts, John A. Andrew. Commanded by Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, it sprang to life after the passage of the Emancipation Proclamation. Douglass and his son Douglass Jr recrusited for the regiment, while his other son enlisted in it' ranks. The 54th trained at Camp Meigs in Readville near Boston. While there they received considerable moral support from abolitionists in Massachusetts including Ralph Waldo Emerson. As it became evident that many more recruits were coming forward than were needed the medical exam for the 54th was described as "rigid and thorough" by the Massachusetts Surgeon-General. This resulted in what he described as the most "robust, strong and healthy set of men" ever mustered into service in the United States. Despite this, as was common in the Civil War, a few men died of disease prior to the 54th's departure from Camp Meigs. The regiment traveled to the south, and first saw true combat, at James Island. • @enterprise160 Very true on both accounts plus they are remembered for what they did and I would like to think that they earned the respect of many union soldiers with their courage in making this charge. The men of the 54th Mass will never be forgotten.

  • @Libertyin2010

They helped the Union end slavery.

  • @Libertyin2010

True. In fact, after the battle of Fort Wagner the 54th was refurbished with new troops and went on to fight in other battles.

  • @enterprise160 In the end they didn't lose.

  • Even though they lost I have to say it, "GO 54TH!!!"

  • why does it have to be ruined with retarded music

  • long live the 54th massachusetts

  • What is it with so many who think their music edits improve on the original score???

  • glory, while a well made film, is nothing more than yankee propaganda. the USCT broke and ran and threw the supporting brigades into confusion. for an accurate look at the battle of Ft. Wagner see E. Milby Burton's the Siege of Charleston which is the signal work on the 584 day siege of this city.

  • before i saw this, i thought coronel shaw was going to survive, he is hawt! lol.. good job matthew!
