An easier way is to eliminate the white glue and wet water, and even alcohol, should you use that. Simply use Pledge floor polish with Future shine. It's much easier as you only drip on the Pledge one time. It doesn't move the ballast and there's only one liquid to deal with. I say this after doing it the old fashioned way for 40 years. And any stray pieces of ballast are easily scraped off, too.

they make a ballast spreader... MORON!!!

@chrsmcwtrs It is not entirely necessary to purchase a ballast spreader in order to add ballast to a model railroad as this video shows. A toothbrush and a steady hand will work fine to spread the ballast.

@chrsmcwtrs If you want to use more expensive tools, go right ahead. I am not yet convinced that they are necessary and curse-filled comments like those that you have left here are not persuasive enough for me to try them.
