"Stretching to Serve: Health Professionals' Altruism and Vulnerability When Meeting Community Needs"
S. Hughes Melton, M.D., FAAFP, President, C-Health PC, Lebanon, Virginia, American Academy of Family Physicians' 2011 Family Physician of the Year and UVA SMD 1993 draws upon a decade of service as a primary care physician in rural Southwest Virginia to discuss what it means for doctors and other health professionals to "stretch to serve." How may drawing on their own altruism and vulnerability enable health care providers to better meet a community's needs? And might these same personal qualities, put into practice in patient care, help to protect clinicians from the burnout that appears to be so common today?
