A new ad for Specsavers across UK National TV from this Sunday 5th April 2009. Directed by James Haworth at Another Film Company for Specsavers in house advertising department and promoting the new varifocal lenses, its a comical look at the attempts of competition to cover up the Specsavers advertising offers in humorous ways.
Shot in Croydon South London using DOP Federico Alfonso.

Another Film Companys director James Haworth says:
The big draw for me was that I saw an opportunity for some great casting. To find some real characters that the public would enjoy watching - and Harrison and his boss tick this box in droves - their on screen relationship is really amusing. We were blessed to be able to work with such intelligent actors.
I loved the fact that the competition are trying to destroy Specsavers advertising in such interesting ways.
Of course, we've seen commercials that rely on humorous vignettes before, but it was the vignettes on this particular page that I thought were so interesting. Some were funny, some downright ingenious, like the bus scenario, and some amusing because of their observed simplicity, such as the balloon.
I wanted to create something cinematic, and above all, something that stands up well to repeat viewing. We shot a 1:235 widescreen ratio and used anamorphic lenses to give the project a more epic feel that really suited the idea, and I worked for the first time with the DOP Fede Alfonso, who I have to say, was exceptional.
I've been fortunate to work with the boys and girls at Specsavers before, and it's always a total pleasure. We work collaboratively, and very openly, and it's great to have a fresh working relationship like this - it makes for a better end result.
Specsavers creative Simon Bougourd says:
Free varifocal lenses is a new offer from Specsavers, so we wanted to make an impact with this commercial - and what better way than with a wrecking ball smashing into a 48 sheet poster.
Its a slightly different take on the Shouldve gone to Specsavers campaign, but as usual we're aiming to get our message across in an amusing and entertaining way.

  • I love this one, they've got it back this year, it's brilliant.

    HARRISON!

  • I'm not usually a fan of inhouse ads, but these are quite good.
