I have been tought that sine wave was impractical because if you get into a habit of it, in a sparring match or in a real fight you might involintarly dip down because you got used to doing it in your training and by the time you got back up and where about to strike you had a fist in your face. But this is just my opinion.
There is an excellent article on sine wave application. Just google the term: TKDTutor sine wave. The first link that pops up should lead to the article. I think after you read it, you will have a better understanding of what I am talking about.
Bottom line is, do your forms as your instructor has taught you and enjoy them. But realize others have purposefully chosen not to use sine wave for some good reasons.
This video is excellent traditional representation of Po-Eun.
well i don't know much about kicking,,but in hand techniques as i know it's more effective and powerfull if you use sine wave,,and we use sine wave as known as "down-up-down motion" in real life,,for example to jump,,which is more higher,,jump without down first or with down and going up?
To let you know my perspective, my original instructor was a college engineering professor, & he broke down the moves with the intent of finding the way to extract the most power. For example, with a side kick, instead of raising the leg with the knee moving up in front of you, he had us orient the knee downward, with the heel up and the knee pushing the heel for power. Sine Wave was no where in anything he taught. It is extra movement not in direction of the target, inefficient & telegraphing.
well as i know,,sine wave in pattern is use to make us more powerfull,,i don't know much about it,,but sometimes i'm a little bit confused too,,and thinking the same way as you,,maybe i should ask somebody who knows about this much :D
If you don't need sine wave in a real fight, what possible use could it be in forms, which traditionally are meant to help a martial artist train for fighting/sparring? With all respect to General Choi, I think near the end he saw people he had taught making a lot of money off TKD, and I believe he developed sine wive to differentiate "true" Tae Kwon Do and be able to make some more money on seminars.
This is Chang-Hon style Tae Kwon Do which was the original style created by Choi Hong Hi without the sine wave.

For every fist I throw, there is a face pushing back with an equal amount of force. :P
