In the summer of 1942, German forces surrounded the city of Stalingrad in a stranglehold that was meant to symbolize Hitlers stranglehold on Stalins own neck. Because the city was named after Stalin, Hitler took the battle for Stalingrad personal, and as a result he became blind to his original objectives, the vast oil fields of the Black Sea. Because of Hitlers immense hatred for Stalin, the Battle of Stalingrad would change the entire direction of the war and for the first time put Germany on the defensive.
