Opera Jawa
(Garin Nugroho, Indonesia, 2006)

Setyo and Siti live a peaceful life as husband and wife, selling earthenware in their village. But when Setyo is called away on business, a flirtatious butcher, Ludiro, takes advantage of Siti's loneliness to seduce her. Tempted by song and dance, Siti initially refuses his advances but acquiesces in a moment of weakness, setting the stage for an epic battle between the two men. Located in lush forests and on pristine beaches of Java, director Garin Nugroho bases his deeply imagistic and dazzling visual narrative on the "The Abduction of Sita," from the Hindu epic, The Ramayana.

Opera Jawa is featured in Global Lens 2008, a U.S. based touring film series presented by The Global Film Initiative. Global Lens 2008 showcases ten feature films from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. • @colibri1953 Do you know what's disturbing? Transformer 2! The plot is amateurish ans yet many people (excluding the critics) love it!

  • @Daan892 People who praise the films are mostly critics, people who frequently attend film festivals and judges of film festivals!

  • @orangenation64 Do you know from all of the movies you mentioned, only one received praise from critics? Have you ever watched films by Robert Altman, Stanley Kubrick, Ingmar Bergman or Andrei Tarkovsky? You didn't answer this question: what do you know about Javanese culture? People who hate this film because they don't have the intellectualism to understand it and only love to watch "tacky films".

  • @Daan892 I read online it was also named the movie most likely to be shown to POWs as torture and also the film most synonymous with hell. You mention "people" who love this movie, that's some statistic you've come up with there, wow.

Movies I find outstanding: 300, Transformers 1, Transformers 2, Transformers 3, Scream, American Pie (literally any of them), Hangover 1, Hangover 2

This film sucks, the people who directed this are wastes of valuable air.

  • @orangenation64 This film uses lots of symbolism and should not be interpreted literally! You claim to know enough about art. How about the Javanese culture? Do you know anything about it? Even people who don't understand it still love this film! For your information, it was praised by many critics and it was nominated for Best Feature Film in three different festivals! If you do know how to appreciate art, please name films you find as "Outstanding".

  • @Daan892 enough to know this blows

  • @orangenation64 What do you know about arthouse films and Javanese culture?

  • @Daan892 I do know how, do you? Because if you love this shit spread all over a camera lens then I question your judgement of "art"

  • @orangenation64 You just don't know how to appreciate art, do you?
