I agree with you M. Crummer....I am an African-American woman and I too believe that music knows no color. I have always loved this song....particularly for its "harmonic value". The harmony is truly tight and the words tell a great story. Too bad a lot of the songs of today don't have that "story-like" quality.

Hey, sorry to read this -- I have similar memories of an Elvis Presley song, "Don't Cry Daddy", that came out just after my dad died (when I was about 10) - I have 7 siblings both older and younger of me at that time that remember mom quickly turning the radio channel when that song came on the radio -- and most distinctly, of her not allowing my brother Jim to play that song on the 'record player" Mom's almost 88 and still going strong but I know Dad's waiting for her on the other side.
