Here is a very basic Half Guard pass that works at all levels of grappling. It focuses on having the underhook (pummel), good base and positional awareness.

There are a number of different ways to perform the pummel pass. There are also a number of different tweaks that you can make to help this be more successful depending on what your opponents does. This is just one, very basic, version of the Pummel Pass.

  • Hey first of all, congrats on the black belt!!! Second, I've been having a lot of trouble with this position, how can I prevent the guy on the bottom from recovering full guard? When I lift myself to loosen the grip on my leg, he uses the space to change to full. Thanks!

  • @Fabyfakid There are a couple of things that you can do to cut down on your opponent recovering Guard. One of the high level ways is to simply squeeze your legs when you tripod up. This can be difficult to maintain passing pressure while cutting down on their hip movement. The second way is to use your head to control their head and then use your free hand to stuff the knee. This can be very difficult to accomplish against someone who has very good hip movement so my advice is to practice!

  • before you get the under hook if he tries to kimura while you have your hand on his shoulder do you start over or just grip the lapel and keep going?

  • @GASmotorsports If your hand is on the shoulder it will be very difficult (if not impossible) for your opponent to kimura that arm. However if during the transition they lock up that kimura grip you need to stop everything immediately and reverse directions. You CAN NOT let them have that grip on the outside arm...I found that out the hard way!
