One of the finest opera productions ever. The simplicity of this production is fantastic. Sarah is a wonderful actress, the whole opera builds to the the final heartbreaking aria and she delivers on every count. Not since Janet Baker has a singer managed to make every word count whilst performing live. Everyone who thinks opera is stuffy should see this production. Truly awsome and a great tribute to one of Englands greatest composers, ssiroe has done a great service by posting these excerpts.

I have only just found this and have immediately placed my order for the DVD. Fabulous performance. I only discovered Sarah Connelly when I saw the Glyndebourne production of Handels Giulio Cesare on Sky (again I bought the DVD). She is a truly convincing operatic actress and while the direction is not as good as the near perfect Handel this a must for anyone who loves opera.
Had he have lived who knows what would have followed?

Dorabella - is it not the baleful presence of the Sorceress who, with her witches, as the libretto says, hates the Queen of Carthage and ' all in pros'prous state' presaging the tragedy that is to follow?

I'll leave a comment to try to increase comment numbers. Is her hair that long or is it some kind of extension? It must be because at the last night of the proms it was short. Beautiful singing but rather disappointing direction and dancing. I think they somewhat missed the point. What IS that person doing walking across the set from three minutes onwards?

This production is a gem indeed. It reminds me of an amateur production of this opera I played in. It had the same simplicity. The strength of it lies in the beautiful voices that express all those emotions. Purcell did brilliant work here to make the music to express such deep - though very dramatic ;), feelings
