When I was a kid Uncle Remus he put me to bed
With a picture of Stonewall Jackson above my head
Then daddy came in to kiss his little man
With gin on his breath and a Bible in his hand
He talked about honor and things I should know
Then he'd stagger a little as he went out the door

CHORUS:
I can still hear the soft Southern wind in the live oak trees
And those Williams boys they still mean a lot to me
Hank and Tennessee
I guess we're all gonna be what we're gonna be
So what do you do with good ole boys like me?

Nothing makes a sound in the night like the wind does
But you ain't afraid if you're washed in the blood like I was
The smell of cape jasmine through the window screen
John R. and the Wolfman kept me company
By the light of the radio by my bed
With Thomas Wolfe whispering in my head

I can still hear the soft Southern wind in the live oak trees
And those Williams boys they still mean a lot to me
Hank and Tennessee
I guess we're all gonna be what we're gonna be
So what do you do with good ole boys like me?

When I was in school I ran with a kid down the street
But I watched him burn himself up on bourbon and speed
But I was smarter than most and I could choose
Learned to talk like the man on the six o'clock news
When I was eighteen, Lord, I hit the road
But it really doesn't matter how far I go

I can still hear the soft Southern winds in the live oak trees
And those Williams boys they still mean a lot to me
Hank and Tennessee
I guess we're all gonna be what we're gonna be
So what do you do with good ole boys like me?
Yeah, what do you do with good ole boys like me?

  • Hey I just got to say that its awesome that you know of and like Don Willams, he's just about an unsung legend of country music now a days. Oh yeah and your Rebel Son video is badass too.

    Keep it trashy.

  • @therebelpossum Yeah I love Don Williams - went to his most recent concert in Hiawassee, he was awesome! - Thanks I'm glad you do! Well I wouldn't say that those things were trashy in my book.

  • The artistry of this video is masterful. Thank you for posting it.

  • "Good Ole Boys Like Me" spent three weeks at number two in May/June of 1980, kept from number one by Ronnie Milsap's "My Heart". A sure number one single met with unfortunate timing. Great song all the same! THanks for posting this one!!

  • Yepper..This some brings back memories when it came out as a kid..Don't make music like this anymore....:)

  • This takes me back to saturday mornings ridding to the dump with my dad in our old 83 F-150 pickup. It was on a greatest hits of country "cassette".

  • This song is like a lull-a-by to me! Just as good as getting whacked with a #1 cast iron skillet on the mellon. Oooh! Pretty stars! I sleep like an angel!

  • I loved this song since i was a young lad, i would really listen to this song going to bed with a scratchy sounding cheap radio. I would picture all he was singing about. I feel this song to my core. Changing subjects the girl holding the fish during song had a great body, loved both song and pics.
