If I had to psychoanalyze John, I would say he has some serious codependency issues and low self esteem. Everyone he has ever cared about at one point or another has either died, gone missing, abandoned him, renounced him, or betrayed him. He doesn't have a true identity, or a true family, and the one person he truly loves and loves him in return, he feels he can't be with. I guess this storyline exposed a dark character flaw about John, but no one is perfect, and I guess that makes him human.

Hmmmm. That makes complete sense. Makes me want to hug him :(. I wonder if your theory was actually taken in to consideration when they created his character and wrote this story. I loved this story so much. It was exsquisite torture.

John couldn't help that he loved Marlena. She was the one person who stood by him, risked her life for him, loved him unconditionally, gave birth to his child, and knew him better than she knew herself.
It was Kristen's fault that she couldn't handle it, you can't force someone to love you. If she had truly loved John she should have given him the option to choose but instead she chose to be selfish and that was ultimately her undoing.

It's called love the one you are with - better than being alone. Or it's called being a user.
