Thanks so much for the info. I hope he doesnt come back. I am feeling like a prisonner in my home waiting to scare him away. So far I have scared him away 4 times. One time I was not home and he did serious damage to my house. 5 big holes

Thansk for he info...but we dont have any insect problems...i had it inspected....I dont know why he is doing this. My house is cedar and he is drilling large holes. He is a real pain and causing lots of damage. I have hung all sorts of shinny strips on the house. I hope this will drive him away.

I think they are protected and they have every right to peck your house apart. I know house cats catch them easily. They're sometimes unfortunately ambushed while on the ground by kitties. I wonder if some cayanne pepper would shoo him away. I find those little round mirrors hanging on a string to scare any birds away. Better than strips of aluminum foil. I also just leave a mirror in the garden face up, and the birds dissappear.

Your house probably has a rotting wood problem, where micro-invertebrate and fungal communities tend to co-inhabit. These birds are eating these insects in your wood and apparently are being well rewarded by some kind of bug, so they keep it up. Look at it as nature's answer to the real question you are facing in your environment. Fix the rotten wood and these BASTARDS will have nothing to eat there. They're hungry. Adios hungry woodpecker!
