Georgios Anagnostopoulos was born in Granitseika, Pyrgos, Elias, a small village on the Ionian Coast, less than 20 miles west of Ancient Olympia . He finished elementary school in Granitseika, graduated from the Gymnasium in Pyrgos, and entered the School of Physics and Mathematics of the University of Athens, where he studied for one year. He completed his education in the United States, receiving a B.S. degree in Engineering and Humanities from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Brandeis University . Since 1969 he has been teaching at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) , where he is a Professor of Philosophy. He also held the Eleftherios Venizelos Endowed Chair at the American College of Greece for the academic year of 2005-2006.

He is also a Founding member and Vice President of The Thesavros of the Greek Language Project, operating in Athens, with the purpose of creating a digital database of the Greek language. As of now, it has digitalized texts adding up to 50 million words, including Greek Historiography from Herodotus to Paparigopoulos and the complete works of some of the great Modern Greek authors, such as Palamas, Papadiamantis, Koraes,Vikelas, etc.

Professor Anagnostopoulos has lived the greater part of his life away from the country and place of his birth. Yet he has remained in touch with both Greece and Elia. Over the years, he has organized and participated in many conferences in Elia, including those of the Olympic Center for Philosophy and Culture, and has remained an active participant in the cultural life of his birthplace.
