I wanted to make a documentary about Pedro, a Dominican shoe-shiner I have known since he was four years old. Far from flattered by the idea, Pedro, with his own script and cinematic ambitions, was opposed. When I agreed to help Pedro get his own project going, an uneasy -- and, at times, hilarious -- collaboration is born, as the college student with the textbook ideas quickly collides with the autobiographical madness of a film-buff.
