Sample Demonstration Lesson - Part 1

This video is a sample ESL demonstration lesson in an extensive reading course working with high intermediate English language learners. These students are learning English for academic purposes in an intensive English program at an American university.


This lesson took place at the beginning of a class session. The vocabulary exercise is used as a warm-up for the class session in order to get students thinking about key vocabulary words and how they fit in the larger theme of the text. Since the students had just finished reading The Giver, by Lowis Lawry, this vocabulary exercise focusing on selected words led nicely into the next part of the class session, which discussed the larger themes of the text.
