Documentary about the Destination Docklands project and how, thanks to Newham Council's ridiculous attitude, the concert(s) nearly never happened.

... So they had safety concerns, but there were no problems at Houston 2 years earlier and perhaps they could have raised the safety issues at the start of the project, not a few days before the event.

... The delay cost Jarre MILLIONS... and after all the fuss there were merely a couple of arrests for drunk and disorderly behaviour.

... In 4 parts.

  • One last thing about the meetings and the man that JMJ is, when they granted the license and everyone was celebrating JMJ made sure he shook the hands of everyone in the hall that turned up to support him; all the fans, starstruck teenagers like myselfm and the old folk that desperately wanted to see something good happen in what was a declining area (for the working class) that were crammed in at the back all got a personal thank you and a brief chat. Thanks JMJ.

  • Hard to believe this is the same council that fought so hard to host the olympics! Thank god their attitude has changed towards big events. Fairplay to JMJ for fighting to hold it in Newham after the way he was treated, but the locals were 100% in favour of the event and I think that's why he continued. Great concerts, great memories and going to school just down the road in a tough part of East London I could finally share my record collection with my classmates without them saying "Jean who?"

  • While I appreciate the saftey aspect this is a council that homes West Ham FC and regularly caters for large crowds as a result. This had more to do with small minded bigots with no understanding of JMJ and his concept. One councillor actually argued that; "This is London, not the South of France so if it's cloudy and people can't see the fireworks they'll want to go home." JMJ then stood up and explained that the fireworks explode below cloud level and the event was actually a concert. Cont....

  • As a teenage resident of Newham at the time and huge fan of JMJ I couldn't believe he was to perform a mile from my home. I went to the meetings in this video and was astonished by what I heard. I honestly believe that the council had no idea what they were turning down until the national outcry and offers of alternative venues embarassed them into a compromise. I'm now a local politician myself, partly inspired by not wanting councils to be run by the kind of councillors at the meetings cont...

  • Interestingly, the Chairman Stephen Timms at (now a Labour MP) at 3:06 and 6:37 was very recently in the news (Novemberr 2010) because a local Muslim woman stabbed him twice in May for voting for the invasion of Iraq back in 2003. It seems he has a habit of making enermys for his decisions. For all his requests for safeguards it seems he was truly duped when it came to Iraq.

  • I remember a phrase of A. Einstein about intelligence and humanity
