For those asking why he did not use a field drum; this was written over 40 years ago. Back then a field drum was larger than the modern version, had catgut snares and it was tuned about half as tight as now.
When I saw the composer perform this, he was using a concert snare. In order to achieve the nuance of dynamics, I think the concert snare is a must. Playing on a rock hard modern field drum is pointless. You might as well play it on a practice pad...you'll get about the same response.

danz2276 is right. If the music says to play on the edge then you play on the edge. but playing softer requires you to control your fingers

No, I gave a legitimate criticism on this piece. And yes, you should buy the music of pieces you want to play - that way composers are able to stay in business and compose new literature. And no, I give plenty of positive comments, I'm sorry you saw my negative ones, but sometimes I feel I need to put forth an honest opinion whether it is good or bad, sometimes I don't feel the need to comment at all.
