First Look at Yoshi 64

Shoshinkai proved furtive ground for little bits of goodness like this clip of Yoshi's Island 64

December 2, 1996 - Yoshi's Island 64, once just a rumor, is now a reality. Or at least damn close to it. At Nintendo's 8th Annual Shoshinkai last week, Nintendo Co. Ltd. previewed a short movie of the game on its giant video screen kitty corner to the press room.

The game appears to be a lush, lively, polygonally animated title with a vibrant color palate and characters familiar to those appearing in previous Yoshi and Mario games. What has not been announced by Nintendo is whether the game will appear on the 64DD or not (or whether it'll be on cart or disk). And, of course, Nintendo didn't include any literature at the show, nor did its execs include the game on the first half, 1997 line-up.

Yoshi's Island 64 (working title), unfortunately, appears to a nostalgic title, harking back to PlayStation's Rayman or even Saturn's Bug!, both of which were "3D games," but only in look, and not in gameplay. The side-scrolling action looks disappointingly familiar, with Yoshi bouncing off giant ferns and leaves, and smacking bad guys on the head.

  • i really beg to differ when it comes to beta vs final..

the fruit concept adds a different strategy to it, rather than just running thru the course to the end

it implies a greater value of gameplay by encouraging the player to explore every inch of the story book, in order to achieve the 30 melon challenge, while seeking out those hidden coins along the way to peak the high score

those looking for a pure adventure game WILL be disappointed, as Yoshi's Story depends on its puzzle element

  • Ok so for the record i actually like Yoshi's Story and i don't know what the yelling about the title is all about because i didn't see people complain when Mario & Luigi RPG 3's title was announced...i just find it stupid that people complain about a title. Plus if you try to do an melon only run you get to see every inch of the level seeing what nintendo put in the game rather than running your ass of and plainly forgetting the levels altogether.

  • @TheSmashbros45 yeah... ? but the beta ones still looks better... look at Banjo-Kazooie for example... the beta one was much better than the final one... the same situation as Yoshi's Story...

  • @Renann64 yoshi's animations and graphics are not better are only different, people say is better cuz they didn't saw this before and they wan't to play it because they can't have it

  • @TheSmashbros45 no, i didnt play the beta, cuz i dont hav it... i just have the final one... and in this on, yoshi's animations and graphics sounds much better than the final one, dats why i said that the beta one looks better...

  • @Renann64 if you played the beta first, you'll say the final is better
