Because of his smoke like powers. In the comics, he can disappear into smoke. And in MK: Shaolin Monks, smoke constantly swirled around him. :D

Ummm... This one is confusing even if you get it.
Pretty much... Hm... How to explain this. Smoke was originally human, until the Lin Kuei changed him into a cyborg. The cells that make him a cyborg, somewhat, have a life of their own. So, when Smoke gained the extra power, so, did the cells (Almost like a parasite). So the cells took over his entire body and the realm to make it into something it wanted. Hope this explains some of it.
