Gasaraki is still considered by few to be groundbreaking in "mecha" genre, but was completely overshadowed by NGE's success.

As for Cowboy Bebop, it was stylish beyond what everyone predicted and it became an instant classic. Obviously well deserved acclaim from everywhere in the world.

Bubblegun Crisis maybe, but the rest, not really exceeding their time, otherthan Yoshihiro Togashi of HxH who is considered a genius mangaka only when he draws and doesn't get sidetracked.

Not Gainax nor Anno could have predicted the outcome of NGE. It was just genre defining, because no other animated series or movies explored such psychological themes. It depicted a lot of sensitive themes normally regarded as "disgusting" that noone, if not in indie movies wanted to explore especially in a cartoon originially timeslotted for kids.

Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's character designs also made a leap too, kind of like how there's a "moe" trend nowadays.
