  • My abiding memory is listening to this innings as a schoolboy on the radio and the commentators running out of superlatives. If Viv were playing these days he'd average 65+.

  • @tain36 80+ I reckon, he would destroy these feeble 'attacks'.

  • I get goosebumps watching this again, The sadest thing is they never ever show this one, And people just seem to talk about his fastest hundred in Antigua or his 189 at Old Trafford or 138 in the World Cup Final. But for pure textbook orthordoxy and class this is one of his finest. FLAWLESS. As Richie Benaud says "beautiful to watch" as he off drives Bob Willis. He made so many great innings of 40s, 50s 60s 70s and 80s which are better than most top batsmen 100s and 200. Sadly no one has them.

  • @TheLuvrat I have them, have most of Viv's innings. He's a lot like Mark Waugh in that way, his 50's and 60's and 70's are better than his tons.

  • I still remember this knock and the batsmenship was truly amazing... thanks so much for this!

  • sir viv at his best

  • @Drewyblue1 Your right he is upset for two reasons. He could of smashed that ball for 6 if he choose to but decided to unselfishly push for a single to give Haynes the strike so that Haynes could try to get his hundred before close of day,Secondly not that Viv cared to much about records but if their was one day he was going to try and get the highest score in test cricket this was going to be it, he was planning to come back the next morning Saturday and really treat the Lords crowd, IF ONLY.

  • His timing and placement were astounding maybe Lara or Ponting at their best could get anywhere near that. Hes seemed to know what shot to play the split second before it was bowled, just amazing to watch!

  • I remember watching this live on telly at home in England, I thought then that it was the finest innings I'd ever seen, and I don't think I've ever seen better. What a privilege to be able to see this again, thank you for this and your other uploads.

  • A class act. The Master Blaster!

  • thanks for ALL your uploads..I keep coming back to the ones with the KING.. Beats watching IPL hands down

  • Recall Arlott (I think) remarking that his strokes that day were hit as if he were using his hands to direct the ball. Thanks for this as I had only heard it on radio all those years ago.
