Anyone could refuse a direct suggestion, but if the suggestions were all misleading for a desired outcome, its very possible to get people to do horrible things to themselves and others. Like if someone was led to believe a real gun was just a squirt gun, their mouth was burning from hot peppers or dry, and the only water is the water in that squirtgun, they would easily blow their own head off.
