MaximsNewsNetwork: 12 April 2010 - UN MINUSTAH: Port-au-Prince, Haiti - On the second day of her visit, the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro left Port-au-Prince by helicopter to travel to Leogane, a western coastal town largely wiped out by the quake in an effort to assess the shelter situation in the area.

Today, exactly three months after the quake, Migiro attended a ceremony in Leogane at the cemetery.

SOUNDBITE (English) Asha-Rose Migiro, Deputy Secretary-General, United Nations:
I hesitate to say, you have buried your dead, I want to say we have buried our dead. I am an African woman, I come from a country that has also experienced earthquake, but surely not to this magnitude. So I understand the pain you are going through and I feel your pain is my pain.

Migiro also visited a school called Ecole Nationale Mixte de Leogane. The site is currently being cleared of rubble. UNICEF is also providing school bags to the school children.

At a camp for the internally displaced in Leogane, Migiro met with the locals. Migiro talked to UN staff on the ground on the current security situation in the camp. Due to the upcoming raining season, there is an urgent need to find better accommodation for the displaced.
