Four white lion cubs are forming part of an extensive white lion breeding program underway at a South African Park. For centuries rumours of mysterious white lions circulated in South Africa. Claims of sightings of the white lion started to surface in 1928. Scattered reports continued but confirmation that these animals were really white did not come until 1975 when a litter containing two white cubs was seen at Timbavati Game Reserve, adjacent to Kruger National Park. Several lions still survive from the original strain, all in captivity, and the breeding of white lions in various zoos around the world must be handled very carefully.

Wow, Beautiful, nothing like inbreeding a species that has no importance in the sustainability of the lion species. Not only that but if in the wild they would die of starvation because they have no camouflage in the savanna where they hunt. Any zoo that would openly purchase these poor animals should be shut down. A zoo's purpose is to educate the public on these wild animals and their plights, not feed in to the abuse and inbreeding which causes many physical defects.

I never said anything about it being albino. Breeding any animal for it's color traits is useless to help a species survive. It's all done to attract people which equals money. Ever think that part of the problem of them being hunted and killed off so easy compared to the "normal" lions is because they stand out so much? Use something other then animal planet and wiki for research. Education, it starts with questions and questioning.

this is not true, I work with white lions that are in the wild. free. and they hunt perfectly normal to any normal tawny lion, color has no issue here. it has been data collecting and research done on it and this guy is telling a lie. breeding animals to be canned hunted for trophy's hunters.

Just a note to MMTT7sALd's response below: White lions are NOT ALBINOS just a genetic mutation with limited pigmentation. White lions have dark eyelids, nose and lips - in albino animals, the eyelids, etc. lacks pigmentation and are pink! :-)

not really, there have already been freed some white lions. go into animal planet webpage and search, its already one years since they were freed and they are alive.
