Sotomayor was one of the most prominent, explosive AIDS activists Chicago has ever known. A Chicago native, Sotomayor, from both Puerto Rican and Mexican descent, grew up in Humboldt Park and established himself as the first nationally syndicated, openly gay political cartoonist. During his career, he created over two hundred cartoons using his talent to bring to public awareness the issues of suffering, discrimination and government inaction associated with the AIDS epidemic in the mid 80s. His cartoons debuted in Chicago in January 1989, and were nationally syndicated until 1991. Daniel died as he lived - fighting -- on February 5, 1992. The exhibit A Hero Comes Home celebrates the legacy of Sotomayor and the indelible mark he made on the AIDS movement. - created at http://animoto.com
