not with a clicker. they quickly learn that the treat comes on your terms, not theirs and that if they grab, and after a bit you vary it with pats, or only treating after a few clicks. this teaches them patience. its a whole different thing to just treating.

You're doing such a great job with her! I love this little filly. She is beautiful. I can take notes from you, as I wish to train once I get a bit older.

Okey so if we rewards our horses while training them it's not really training? Omg, then I have never trained my horse o.O

hand feeding treats at such a young age can cause bad biting habits as they get older..

love clicker training animals such a fantastic communication system :))

The filly is, quite literally, biting at the hand that feeds her. Ears back, tail swishing, only bothered about a food reward, not a great foundation.

What a cute horse. I love this training method and I think horses should be taught with positive reinforcement instead of negative. I teach with natural horsemanship. :3

I don't understand , why horses don't need treats? Do I think wrong when I think horses do need positive reinforcement too? And not just negative? I have never been on a horse and i don't need to. I think horse riding like most people do is cruel to the horse even if you don't know it. I think all horses must learn to let people sit on them this way, with treats and much love.
To train horses with treats is never a real training, sorry.

@nonomaok Do you have some videos I can see of your "real" training methods?

I missed the treats you fed the filly before she was eating hay... What was it? My foal is good and fine with letting you you the halter on but leading he is struggling with.

@StephKnMimi Our foal was quite motivated by scratches on the butt or other favorite spots before she started eating hay. Hopefully you can use scratching itchy spots or brushing him/her as a reward until your foal is eating hay.

At this age, mom was always nearby -- usually in the same paddock or an adjacent one. Tempo loved clicker training so much she would happily leave mom to play with us!
