1 Peru

Think of Peru and one imagines the hills of the Andes, forgotten fortresses and warlike civilizations. Less is known about the historical and violent links that unite the people and the ocean, and the rich marine current of Humboldt, responsible for Peru's place in the world as one of the top fish producing countries. Jérôme Delafosse travels along the Pacific coast to try to understand the issues of fishing in Peruvian modern society. He observes sea cliff acrobats who humbly risk their lives for a few shellfish, fishermen who go back every night with their bare hands to pull up several tons of giant squid and the Caballitos, frail boats dating back to Pre-Incan civilizations. Jérôme uncovers a world where environmental respect and tradition are at odds with the large industrial fisheries that risk condemning the country's resources.
