In this 2 minute video Jason, a 6th year student, expresses his sense of unfulfillment and frustration at the curriculum as he feels that his Irish language studies have fallen short of his expectations.

On the other hand Jason's teacher and principal, representing the education establishment, make the point that studying Gaeilge is merely a means to an end - obtaining points in leaving cert.

Could both goals be accommodated by taking a different approach? What do you think?

Developing and delivering an effective, engaging and relevant language learning strategy that would span the 14 years spent in school is not a difficult undertaking.

Learning Gaeilge should be about attaining a level of confidence & competence in using the language in informal, social interaction.

A real achievement for learners would be to partake in and contribute to general everyday dialogue.

This aspect of the language is unfortunately absent from both the junior and leaving cert syllabi.

But seriously - this does raise an important point. Why do we (the system, the schools, etc) insist on ruining and extracting any bit of fun and engagement when learning irish in schools?

Why can't we talk about 'real life'?

Why can't we focus on speaking like other European languages?

Why can't we learn real words about real life with real people?

Let's give our pupils the brushes and canvas - not perfect cottages by the sea to paint by number.
