What's new Google?
Last week Google launched "Google New". At Google New you can keep up with everything you want to know about Google. You can find the latest product and feature launches from Google. Google New seems to aggregate all the Google blogs and shows the latest posts from them on this site. It provides a search box to search for Google products. It also displays a highlighted Google product.
Google Adwords keyword tool out of beta
One of the new Google products you may find in Google New is the Google Adwords keyword tool. Two months ago Google announced the new keyword tool. Since last week the 'beta' sign has been pulled off the new Adwords tool. According to Google they've combined the best features from two previous keyword tools into one which should result in more flexible search options, Easier Keyword Refinement and easier adding keyword ideas as negatives.
Rich Snippets in Google Local Search Results
Local is getting more and more important. Google recognizes that. Google is now incorporating rich data into it's local search results. Local directories can now include the number of reviews and price range which will be shown in the search listings as you see here.
Google Chrome and Analytics don't go together?
Remarkable: according to a Techcrunch post the new Google Chrome, version 6, apparently is causing issues with Google Analytics, causing traffic data to be upset for visitors using Chrome's browser. Apparently unique visitors numbers go up while average number of pages viewed by each user is dropping off.
Google responded to the issue saying there was an issue, but that it has been fixed in the most recent Chrome update.
Watch Videos with friends on YouTube
YoutTube now has a nice add on to their service. SocialVision launched YouTubeSocial. YouTubeSocial combines Facebook's Social Graph with IM-like chatting capabilities. Its pretty easy to set up. Changing the url of a video into "YouTubeSocial.com" and off you go. You can either copy a URL to invite your friends to the video or use the Facebook Connect integration.
YouTube wins copyright case
YouTube won a copyright infringement case in Spain over the uploading of copyrighted videos by YouTube users. The case was triggered by Telecinco, a Spanish broadcast TV channel. The court rejected Telecinco's claim, noting that YouTube offers content owners tools to remove copyright infringing content and this means that it is the responsibility of the copyright owner -- not YouTube -- to identify and tell YouTube when infringing content is on its website.
YouTube Instant creator goes to... YouTube
YouTube Instant has nothing to do with YouTube and was a personal initiative from Stanford computer science student Feross Aboukhadijeh, at that time working for Facebook.
The site hit one million visitors last week and the owner of the site got a new job. He was hired by YouTube! Aboukhadijeh will continue to attend Stanford while he works at the company.
Microsoft Cashback is back, now Bing Rewards
Microsoft used to have Microsoft Cashback to attract users to use their search engine. And Cashback is back. Microsoft is rolling out Bing Rewards Preview (beta). It's a credit card or airline-style loyalty program that offers users credits that can be redeemed for products, gift cards or charitable donations. For it to work you need to install the Bing Bar toolbar, have a Windows Live ID, be on a Windows machine and use Internet Explorer. The program is mainly seeking to get casual Bing users more engaged and "have a conversation" with them about Bing features and capabilities.
New Sphinn is here
We talked about Sphinn changing things around before and Sphinn didn't sit still to implement the changes. Last week Sphinn introduced "Sphinn 3.0" where the complete voting system has been removed. Its the editors that promote stories to the homepage. Sphinn now emphases on discussion. You can now put in discussions without having to post an article. Sphinn is back to being a forum you could say. We wonder how it 'feels' the traffic hit.
Facebook outage: things don't change
Last week many Facebook users were unable to access the social networking site for up to two and a half hours on Thursday, the worst outage the website has had in over four years. The problems were traced back to a change made by Facebook in one of its systems. The only option was to turn the site off entirely and start up again slowly.
